Overview

Microsoft Configuration Manager, formerly System Center Configuration Manager or ConfigMgr, is Microsoft’s on-premises platform for managing Windows endpoints at scale. District IT teams use it for operating-system deployment, software distribution, update management, hardware and software inventory, configuration controls, reporting, and remote administrative workflows.

For imaging, Configuration Manager uses Windows ADK, boot images, content distribution, task sequences, drivers, and PXE or media-based deployment to install or refresh Windows devices. It requires substantial server, SQL, network, security, content, and client infrastructure and may operate alongside Microsoft Intune, so districts should document which system owns each workload.
