Overview

Clonezilla is free, open-source disk-imaging and cloning software used to copy partitions or entire drives for deployment, backup, migration, and bare-metal recovery. Clonezilla Live handles one machine at a time, while Clonezilla Server Edition works with DRBL and network services to deploy an image to multiple computers.

The tool is well suited to technician-led imaging where districts can manage boot media, image storage, partition compatibility, encryption, and network configuration. It is not a full endpoint-management platform: application lifecycle, configuration policy, patching, inventory governance, and remote support generally require other systems or local procedures.

Features
Disk and partition imaging
  • Copies supported file systems by saving used blocks and can fall back to sector-by-sector copying for unsupported formats.
  • Supports local media and several network storage methods.
Single or mass deployment
  • Clonezilla Live supports individual backup and restore, while Server Edition supports network deployment and multicast workflows.
  • Unattended operation can be scripted with boot parameters and command options.
Recovery and control considerations
  • Supports image encryption, boot-loader handling, MBR and GPT disks, and restore to multiple local devices.
  • Districts should test each hardware and firmware model and tightly control images containing sensitive data.
