Overview
Supplemental Literacy Informational Text Grades K–12

ReadWorks is a nonprofit library of passages, article-a-day routines, question sets, and reading supports. It is intended primarily for K–12 readers, including multilingual learners and students needing accessible text support, with students, teachers, reading specialists, and content-area educators using it to support reading comprehension, vocabulary, background knowledge, fluency, and content-area literacy.

Teachers assign texts and paired resources, build knowledge sequences, use audio and vocabulary supports, and review written or selected responses. Districts should evaluate how the product fits adopted curriculum, student needs, instructional time, and the work educators must do around it.

Features
Audience and instructional role
  • Grades / learners: K–12 readers, including multilingual learners and students needing accessible text support
  • Primary users: students, teachers, reading specialists, and content-area educators
  • Learning focus: reading comprehension, vocabulary, background knowledge, fluency, and content-area literacy — a nonprofit library of passages, article-a-day routines, question sets, and reading supports
How it supports learning
  • Teachers assign texts and paired resources, build knowledge sequences, use audio and vocabulary supports, and review written or selected responses.
  • Teachers should connect use to explicit learning goals and inspect student work rather than rely on completion or engagement alone.
Implementation and instructional decisions
  • Use coherent text sets and grade-level content with purposeful scaffolds; isolated passage practice should not become the entire literacy curriculum.
  • Districts should confirm accessibility, language support, student-data practices, assignment workflow, reporting, and the continuing role of teacher judgment.
