  1. How would you establish priorities and a practical annual work plan for relational and cloud databases, schemas, views, procedures, jobs, reporting stores, backups, monitoring, and data services?

    Strong response indicators: Connects district goals and user needs to risk, dependencies, capacity, owners, milestones, service measures, communication, and review rather than producing an unranked project list.

  2. Describe a time you found that a familiar process or report was producing unreliable results. How did you investigate and correct it?

    Strong response indicators: Defines the expected result, traces evidence to authoritative sources, distinguishes symptoms from root causes, involves accountable owners, tests the correction, reconciles downstream effects, documents decisions, and monitors recurrence.

Position Description

Under the direction of the appropriate district administrator, the Database Specialist administers and supports assigned databases and data services, protects integrity and availability, develops approved queries and structures, and resolves complex data problems.

The position connects policy, people, process, information, and technology; establishes repeatable practices; makes unresolved risk visible; and supports continuous improvement without displacing the authority of designated program, legal, privacy, security, fiscal, instructional, or executive decision-makers.

Reports To

Required Education and Credentials

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, data management, software engineering, or a related field; equivalent qualifying experience may be accepted by local policy.
  • No specific credential is universally required; relevant database, cloud, security, data engineering, or vendor certification is preferred.
  • Successful completion of all district-required employment clearances and assigned privacy, security, accessibility, records, and safety training.

Preferred

  • Graduate study, advanced coursework, or current professional learning directly related to the position’s assigned scope.
  • Relevant training in project management, facilitation, change management, data-informed improvement, and public-sector service.

Required / Desired Experience

Required Experience

  • Experience supporting relational databases, SQL, schemas, permissions, performance, backup, recovery, reporting, and production troubleshooting.
  • Experience coordinating deadline-driven work with multiple departments, users, or school sites.
  • Experience handling confidential information and documenting decisions, exceptions, and completed work.

Desired Experience

  • K–12 experience with SIS, HR, finance, assessment, data warehouse, integration, high availability, cloud databases, scripting, and database development lifecycle.
  • Experience developing procedures, training users, improving processes, and supporting continuity during staff or system changes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Database Administration and Reliability

  • Install, configure, monitor, patch, upgrade, and support assigned database platforms and services according to approved standards.
  • Manage capacity, storage, jobs, logs, alerts, performance, availability, maintenance, and service dependencies.
  • Coordinate support and escalation with infrastructure, application, cloud, and vendor teams.

Data Structures and Development Support

  • Develop or support schemas, tables, keys, constraints, indexes, views, procedures, functions, queries, and approved reporting structures.
  • Review SQL and database changes for correctness, performance, security, maintainability, deployment, and rollback.
  • Maintain environment separation, source control, release records, test evidence, and production-change discipline.

Security, Backup, and Recovery

  • Administer database roles and privileged access based on approved requests; review permissions and remove access promptly.
  • Implement encryption, auditing, secure connections, secrets practices, vulnerability remediation, and evidence collection.
  • Maintain backups, retention, restoration, high availability, disaster recovery, and periodic recovery testing with documented results.

Integrity, Support, and Documentation

  • Monitor constraints, duplicates, orphaned records, job outcomes, loads, reconciliation, and other indicators of integrity.
  • Investigate incidents and complex data issues, coordinate authorized correction, validate downstream results, and document root cause.
  • Maintain diagrams, inventories, runbooks, data dictionaries, contacts, known issues, and continuity materials; perform other related duties consistent with classification.

Work Environment

  • Work is performed primarily in district offices, schools, meeting rooms, training environments, and other computer-based professional settings, with remote participation as authorized.

Other Requirements
