Position Description
Under the direction of the appropriate district administrator, the Chief Technology Officer provides executive and technical direction for infrastructure, platforms, engineering, operations, architecture, and technology-service delivery.
The position connects policy, people, process, information, and technology; establishes repeatable practices; makes unresolved risk visible; and supports continuous improvement without displacing the authority of designated program, legal, privacy, security, fiscal, instructional, or executive decision-makers.
Reports To
Illustrative reporting relationship: Superintendent, chief information officer, chief business official, or other cabinet-level executive. Insert the school district’s approved reporting relationship here.
Required Education and Credentials
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, engineering, educational technology, business or public administration, or a related field; a graduate degree is preferred.
- No specific credential is universally required; relevant architecture, cloud, network, service-management, project, or security certifications are preferred.
- Successful completion of all district-required employment clearances and assigned privacy, security, accessibility, records, and safety training.
Preferred
- Graduate study, advanced coursework, or current professional learning directly related to the position’s assigned scope.
- Relevant training in project management, facilitation, change management, data-informed improvement, and public-sector service.

- Progressively responsible technology leadership across infrastructure, cloud, networks, platforms, engineering, service management, projects, and employees.
- Experience coordinating deadline-driven work with multiple departments, users, or school sites.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Architecture and Engineering
- Define technology architecture, standards, reference patterns, roadmaps, lifecycle practices, and approved exceptions.
- Direct engineering for networks, cloud, identity, endpoints, platforms, collaboration, integration, automation, and observability.
- Reduce unsupported systems, fragile dependencies, configuration drift, unnecessary complexity, and technical debt.
Reliable Operations and Service Management
- Establish service ownership, objectives, monitoring, on-call practices, incident, problem, change, release, capacity, and knowledge management.
- Coordinate maintenance and major changes around school operations, assessment windows, enrollment, payroll, safety, and other critical cycles.
- Use service evidence and user experience to prioritize reliability, performance, support, and operational improvement.
Security, Resilience, and Continuity
- Implement security architecture and controls in partnership with the CISO and ensure remediation is owned and verified.
- Maintain tested backup, restoration, disaster-recovery, failover, alternate-operation, and dependency documentation.
- Coordinate technical incident response, evidence preservation, recovery sequencing, validation, and return-to-service.
Leadership, Projects, and Vendors
- Lead employees, budgets, projects, procurements, contracts, vendors, licensing, assets, documentation, and succession.
- Apply disciplined discovery, design, testing, migration, adoption, and postimplementation review to technology initiatives.

Work Environment

Other Requirements
- Successfully complete required criminal-record, fingerprint, and employment clearances.
