California Professional Standards for Education Leaders · 4A–3

Solicit input from and communicate regularly with all parents and families in ways that are accessible and understandable.

Communication becomes engagement when families can understand it, respond to it, and see that their response mattered.

What this looks like in practice

{"More messages do not necessarily produce better communication. Leaders should choose the channel and cadence according to the purpose"=>"urgent notice, routine update, confidential conversation, public consultation, or sustained relationship. Every channel should have an answer to \u201CHow can a family respond?\u201D"}

Participation data can reveal blind spots when handled carefully. Compare response patterns by language, school, grade span, delivery method, and other locally appropriate dimensions, while protecting privacy. A gap is a prompt to investigate access and trust—not evidence that a family does not care.

Developing the practice

Match channel to purpose

Define which messages belong in text, email, phone, web, print, meetings, or direct outreach, and avoid making one platform the only doorway.

Test comprehension

Ask a small, representative group of families to explain a draft notice in their own words before broad distribution.

Report back

Publish a short “you said, we learned, we will” response so participation has a visible consequence.

Questions for reflection and mentoring

  • Which families can receive our messages but still cannot participate in the decision?
  • What would we learn by comparing response patterns across channels and languages?
  • When did family input last cause us to change course?
