The California Distinguished Schools Program recognizes elementary and secondary schools in alternate years and acknowledges outstanding education programs and practices. Schools are awarded for achieving exceptional student performance for two consecutive years or closing the achievement gap between two school years. The selection process is highly competitive and involves meeting various eligibility criteria and completing a comprehensive application process. Here are some key requirements and components for a school to become a "California Distinguished School":

  1. Eligibility Criteria: The eligibility criteria can vary slightly from year to year but generally include:

    • Meeting a minimum API (Academic Performance Index) score requirement, or its current equivalent, depending on the accountability system in place at the time.
    • Meeting or exceeding the state's requirements on various performance indicators, such as assessment results, chronic absenteeism rates, graduation rates, and other academic performance metrics.
    • Not having been identified for comprehensive support and improvement (CSI) or targeted support and improvement (TSI) under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

  2. Application Process: Eligible schools are invited to apply, and the application involves:

    • Demonstrating significant gains in narrowing the achievement gap.
    • Detailed descriptions of two signature practices that have led to an increase in student outcomes and how these practices can be replicated in other schools.

  3. Review and Validation: Applications are reviewed by a selection committee, and schools that meet the criteria are subject to a validation visit or review by county office of education teams, which confirms the accuracy of the data and the implementation of the practices described in the application.

  4. Recognition: Schools that successfully meet all the requirements are officially designated as California Distinguished Schools. The recognition is valid for two years, after which schools may be eligible to apply again.

The specific criteria and application process can evolve, reflecting changes in educational standards, state policies, and priorities. Therefore, it's important for interested schools to consult the California Department of Education (CDE) website or contact the CDE for the most current information regarding the program requirements and application process.
